Taoyuan County

Longtan Township in Taoyuan County has a population of just over 100,000. The Headquarters of the R.O.C. Army are located here. The town itself it not particularly spectacular though the Nantian Palace is very picturesque, particularly at night as it casts its reflection upon the Longtan Lake.

Taoyuan County in northern Taiwan is in fact the most likely arrival point for most first time visitors to Taiwan as Taiwan Taoyuan International Airport formerly known as Chiang Kai Shek International Airport (CKS), which services Taipei, is located here in Dayuan Township. Taoyuan County has the largest population of Hakka people in the country as well as a significant population of Atayal aborigines, mostly in Fuxing Township. Golfer Yani Tseng and Olympic tae kwan do gold medal winner Chu Mu-yen were born in Taoyuan and it is the base of the Lamigo Monkeys who play in the Chinese Professional Baseball League (CPBL).

For the tourist sites of interest include; Shihmen Reservoir, The "Window on China" theme park which exhibits miniatures of many Chinese landmarks such as the Great Wall and the Forbidden Palace as well as some more international ones such as the Eiffel Tower and Mount Rushmore, and Cihu Mausoleum which contains the final remains of former president Chiang kai Shek.

Shihmen Reservoir, a short distance from Longtan is the largest body of fresh water in northern Taiwan and is a popular recreational destination offering hiking, cycling and water activities.

The reservoir also forms part of the scenic Northern Cross Island Highway which links Taoyuan to Ilan.
