Right: Jialeshui on the East Coast Ping Tung is Taiwan's southermost county. This tropical region has a number of attractions for visitors including the Indigenous People's Culture Park at Sandimen, Kenting National Park, and the National Museum of Marine Biology as well as some nice beaches for recreational marine activities. |

Right: Aboriginal Dwelling at Sandimen About an hour east of Ping Tung City is the small aboriginal community of Sandimen which is also the location of the Indigenous People's Culture Park. The park includes displays of each of Taiwan's nine indigenous tribes and there are regular song and dance shows in the auditorium. |

Kenting near the southern tip of Taiwan has a number of popular beaches for swimming including Nanwan, Shiaowan and Baisha Bay. Jialeshui and Nanwan are popular with surfers and diving is also an option. The area is also excellent for bird watching. The entrance to Kenting National Park is just north of town and further around is Sheting Natural Park which is a little more understated and very pleasant to stroll around.
The National Museum of Marine Biology is North of Kenting near the town of Checheng on the west coast. (2 Houwan Rd. Checheng). Avoid the weekend and public holidays if you can when it becomes a bit of a madhouse!
Shiao Liuchiu ("Little Okinawa") is a small coral island off the western seaboard. I haven't made the trip myself but it is said to be very nice and has much to offer the casual explorer. Ferries regularly service the island leaving from Dong Gang. You can also take a motorcycle on the ferry.
The town of Hengchun is significant as one of the few places in Taiwan to have four remaining city gates and wall. The fortification was built in the 1870s in the face of a percieved Japanese threat. Hengchun has more recently been thrust into the spotlight as the location of "Cape Number Seven" a romantic comedy which is to date Taiwan's biggest box office sccess.
